Engine & Turbine Manufacturing in France industry analysis

Revenue is forecast to swell at a compound annual rate of 0.7% to €7 billion over the five years through 2025, including a forecast jump of 8% in the current year, when the average profit margin will be 5.6%. The main driver of revenue is France’s efforts to meet net zero targets, generating significant public and private investment, which is boosting wind turbine orders. In March 2022, France announced its initiative to invest €1 billion to build two floating wind farms in the Mediterranean ocean, with a capacity of 250 MWh each, generating a wave of orders for turbines. Manufacturers have been quick to invest in producing floating wind turbines that can cope with harsher conditions and generate cheap electricity without interruptions, which has been a previous problem for wind generation.  The major markets for wind turbines have shifted their interest to floating wind trubines, driving orders for manufacrurers and prompting investment in developing floating turbines.

Trends and Insights

  • Import competition from China limits revenue prospects. Wind turbine manufacturers have been especially hard hit. Eurostat figures show that China took up 61% of European wind turbine imports in 2022, eating into local manufacturers’ sales.
  • Turbine sales drop despite investment in renewable energy growing. Sales of combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGTs) have increased as Europe invests in boosting CCGT capacity, but orders of European wind turbines have still dipped recently.
  • No manufacturer holds significant sway over the market. Even though the industry includes several major international corporations, like Siemens Energy and MAN Energy Solutions, medium-size companies producing specialised engine and turbine parts dominate the market.
